Children's Literature
This is a second appearance for Eddie and his best friend Matt. Matt really wants to win the fifty dollar prize at this year's science fair so he can buy a new skate board. He knows Eddie is the perfect partner to come up with a great project. Trouble erupts when Matt is home sick and discovers that Eddie blabbed to everyone about why he missed school. The friends have a falling out. Matt, in a fit of anger, wrecks their science project just before the competition is to begin. Now winning seems out of the question. The lively black-and-white sketches add greatly to the story by vividly portraying the characters and story line. Readers of the Owen Foote and Jake Drake stories will surely enjoy this book. 2005, Holiday House, Ages 6 to 9.

Gr 2-4-Matt wants to win the science fair because the prize is a $50 gift certificate, the amount he needs to buy "the skateboard of his dreams." The third grader is sure that if he teams up with Eddie, they will take first place because his friend is "the king of crazy ideas." Then Matt stays home from school because he is sick, Eddie tells the class that he has diarrhea, and the kids make fun of him upon his return. Matt is so mad that he cuts the papier-mache volcano that he and Eddie built in half. Eventually, Eddie apologizes and salvages the project, and the boys enter the contest. Matt learns that finishing the job and mending their friendship are more important than winning at the fair. Readers will relate to Matt's experiences and feelings. An explanation of how to make a model of an erupting volcano is included. Humorous black-and-white drawings, an easy-to-read text, and a kid-friendly story make this a good selection for beginning chapter-book readers.--Debbie Stewart Hoskins, Grand Rapids Public Library, MI Copyright 2005 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Third-grader Matt and his best buddy Eddie want to win the $50 gift certificate prize for first place in the science fair. Eddie has a great idea-or so he says. Matt has a soft spot for Eddie, but some amnesia too. Matt has forgotten the time Eddie started a fire in the front yard and the broken laundry basket roller coaster. In the middle of all the preparation week, Matt gets a stomach bug and has to miss school. Worse, he misses working with Eddie. When he returns, he falls victim to his friend's impulsive behavior. Seems that Eddie has told all the details of his illness, including the dreaded word, "diarrhea." The volcano that was the science project is now exploding with Matt's anger and shame. When he destroys the plaster creation, the friendship might be over as well. It takes one sister, stranded on the roof, to bring the boys together again in this early chapter book about friendship and forgiveness. Fast-paced and realistic, this tale rings true for its young readers. (Fiction. 6-9)
