The first stanza of Canto I. from "That Stanley!":
THE Herald man at midnight lay
Awake, and longing for a day
When every soul throughout the land
Would for the Herald reach a hand.
But what new subject could be found
To bring that happy time around?
No more the wild beasts could be loosed
In Central Park, and people goosed.
The Cuban war, the Fenian Raid,
And local politics were played.
What now would agitate the Nation
Or raise the sinking circulation?
Awake he lay, and mused in vain,
Till sleep with notions filled his brain.
Brave Livingston had lost his way,
And Africa unwritten lay;
The pot was there but no one knew
The real ingredients of the stew;
The Herald would remove the lid,
And show all Nations what lay hid.
