That Summer In Sicily

Overview

That summer in Sicily, Marlena de Blasi would enter into a world of unforgettable magic. There, in a forgotten time and place, she would discover the secret Sicilian villa of Donnafugatta, where life was ruled by ritual—and by the unassailable seventy-year-old matriarch and protectress, Tosca.

Willowy and aloof, with an aura of a distant time, Tosca was a woman whose life story begged to be told. In the warmth of Tosca’s kitchen, where ancient blessings are murmured and Pecorino...

In the warmth of Tosca’s kitchen, where ancient blessings are murmured and Pecorino grated over simmering pots of purple eggplants, the story of Tosca’s fairy-tale romance with an Italian prince would unfold.

This bountiful feast for the imagination is filled with gorgeous food, larger-than-life characters, beauty, tragedy, and a love that fills the heart.

    I Also Recommend:

    That Summer in Sicily

Unlike her other stories, this one does not chronical the lives of Marlena De Blasi and her husband Fernando and their adventures living in Italy, but brings us the compelling story of two other protagonists weaving a touching story of their lives, loves, and loss. We are drawn into the story of Tosca and her "Prince" and follow their lives through social upheaval, war, and his defiance of the local mafia which costs the lovers dearly. De Blasi's writing is rich in folklore and imagery, taking the reader into the lives of the Sicilian peasants and gentry she writes so movingly about.

the sounds, the smells, the sun

I enjoyed this book immensely. The smell of the foods, the heat of the sun, and the blue of the sky. I experienced it all. This book feels like it was rolled over and over in the author's mind until the wording was perfect. And oh yes, it was perfect.

    I loved this book.

I am not sure what I was expecting, when I found this book, but I was quite surprised at the storytelling that actually became the center of the story.

The book was well written, and the actual "story within a story" was great.
It felt as if the story was moving a little slow at times, but I didn't mind, because it was exactly the way I would think a story would be told, in the Summer, in Sicily.

    Good Summer Read

It was my book club selection. It was a very satisfying and interesting story. Characters and locations were very vivid and story line kept you turning the pages.

Had never heard of the author but will read other books by her.

    Good summer read.

    Yet Another Poor Sequel

De Blasi's first novel remains one of my all-time favorite, read again and again, "lite reads." In it, she artfully writes about Venice, new love, fashion, Italian markets and their shopkeepers. Progressively, her sequels seem to lose the passion of A Thousand Days in Venice until the hopeful reader gets to That Summer in Sicily. With forced attention, the reader plows through one predictable chapter after another until at last the reader declares, "Totally disappointing!"

I have found it difficult to separate the author's so called

Non fiction from fiction despite the receipes and even the blurbs seem unable to i d the genre in apparently three year cycles of moving somewhere else. This fairy tale life seems an accurate descriotion a light summer fantasy a porch read and leave it for the next one
