    Trash

Save your money and read "Behind Closed Doors-The Tragic and Untold Story of the Duchess of Windsor" by Hugo Vickers for a factual and more detailed portrait. Mr Vickers was actually there. He was also the historical consultant for the movie "The King's Speech."

    A Disappointment

I bought this book with high expectations of learning something different about the Duchess of Windsor's highly publicized life. I had hoped that the author would offer a fresh perspective on the subject. Having just finished Greg King's extensive book, "The Duchess of Windsor, The Uncommon life of Wallis Simpson," I found that much of Ms. Sebba's material was simply a rehash of Mr. King's references. After waiting about a month for this book's release, I found it to be a huge waste of money. Read Greg King's book if you want a finely crafted and fascinating account of the life of the Duchess of Windsor.

Nook Need Pix, Book is Awful

First, if this is a book about a fashion icon I don't understand why the Nook version would not include photos. How can I visualize her fashion sense if I can't see it?

Second, Anne Sebba is more interested in rehashing malicious gossip and unflattering displays then creating an interesting character study of a little girl who grew up depending on the kindness of relatives, married the material security she craved, and lost all the things that make life worth living - friends, career, home, children.

I am not surprised a British biographer struggles to find sympathy for Wallis Simpson since the British revere their royalty but I struggle to demonize a woman who is a 1930's Carrie Bradshaw. The problem was Edward as King and Head of the Church could not marry a divorcee. If he wanted to marry her, his government said, he would have to abdicate. He abdicated and everyone hated Wallis for it.

After the abdication, the couple lived in exile and Wallis received vicious hate mail daily. As exiles, they didn't have a home base to make roots and friends. As social pariahs, companies or charities wouldn't work or associate with them. They had money but no purpose so Wallis did what most depressed women do: Shop. Not a good time for retail therapy during WWII but I do understand it.

Third, Prince Charles is divorced and his wife, Camilla, got divorced to marry him and he is going to be King and Head of the Church so if Britain is over divorcees as monarchs and consorts then isn't time to stop abusing "that woman" like it's still 1936? I think the book Wallis Simpson deserves is yet to be made and this book certainly isn't even close.

Really forgettable. Not only does the book fail to offer any new information, but in addition, it clouds the water with page upon page of complete speculation. "The Duchess's alleged sexual disorders," etc. etc. consists of nothing more than unsourced personal speculation. If you've read any of the previous books on the Duchess or the Duke, you've learned everything that this book has to offer. I, too, purchased and read this book with high hopes, and was sorely disappointed. A real waste.

"That Woman" was either poorly written or very poorly

"That Woman" was either poorly written or very poorly edited. I found the writing style to be difficult to understand and had to read many paragraphs more than once to comprehend what the author was expressing. Although the story in an intriguing one, it is rather boring.
I do not recommend this book.

    Just OK

Bit of a rehash, but found the sections on Ernest's family interesting. Too much speculation.

    Poor scholarship

The author makes psychological assessments without having the credentials to do so and rhen uses her own theorirs to ecplain the motivation of her subjects.

    not so sympathetic

Duchess of Windsor was never portrayed in a sympathetic light and this proves no different. However, this was a more accurate portrayal of the abdicated King. This was not so much a love story as two co-dependent personalities latching onto each other and afraid to let go. the psychological flaws are from childhood and Wallis created a Hell for herself and the ex-King tagged along. If Wallis had not come along some other unfortunate woman would have been chosen. This was not the romanticized love story we all would like to believe and I think the author did portray that. The alleged physical abnormalities of the Duchess are just that, alleged. I cannot believe the ex-King would have maintained a deformed spouse (not all the thing). The psychological study of the Duke was accurate. Queen Victoria allowed the eldest son to be abused as a child and this is reflected in the way the Duke was treated and his siblings. The Duke and Duchess were products of their times and the result of the Victorian ideals in America and Europe. I think the social climate and the era created the marriage. Wallis is still the bad penny and the view of the author unsympathetic.

    Not worth it

To put it bluntly, this book stinks. It's the USA Today/Star magazine of Windsor "biographies." Full of unproven speculation, rumor, and innuendo, this book offers nothing new. I'm sorry I wasted my money on it.

    "That Woman" is That Good!

What an absolute pleasure this book was! It combined history with the added fascination of a controversial and sometimes salacious dime novel...and I mean this in a most complimentary way. I highly enourage you, dear reader, to purchse this account of a famous AND infamous couple.
