School Library Journal
Gr 3- 6 Long-time friends Thatcher and Kibby have a lot in common: they like the same things, and Kibby's mother and Thatcher's father were both killed in the same airplane accident. Kibby longs for a neat, organized household, and Thatcher wants a Dad to share his love of sports. For them, the ideal solution is for their parents to marry each other. This presents some problems, since there are hard feelings left over from the accident, but once the kids get their parents together and talking, the conclusion becomes inevitable, and the wedding takes place. It is then that Kibby begins to face the results of their scheme: a new house, a new school and leaving old friends. Thatcher is hard to take in daily doses as a brother, and her new stepmother and her father are busy starting their new life together. Kibby begins to feel rejected and decides that she's no longer wanted in the family. The premise of the book is both timely and entertaining. The story moves quickly despite its lack of suspense and a rather pat ending. Kibby is the only fully realized character, but children should relate to both her needs and her sense of betrayal in the new family situation. A light look at a common situation. Eleanor K. MacDonald, University Elementary Sch . Lib . , Los Angeles
