Overview

Sometimes it takes a live album to convey the rabid fascination that listeners often have for a cult artist. Over the course of seven critically acclaimed albums, Julia Fordham has built up a core fan base that responds to her pure-toned, heartfelt vocals and finely wrought songwriting. Bringing together the best influences from folk-pop, jazz, and light funk, Fordham has crafted a style and sound that separates her from the pack. Thanks to sympathetic production from Larry Klein, which enhances both the immediacy and atmospheric climate of Fordham’s evocative songs, her recent studio albums have been among the singer's finest efforts. That’s Live -- not to be confused with Fordham’s earlier studio release That’s Life -- suggests that this perennial favorite may be most effective as a live performer. The richness of Fordham’s compositional gifts is abundantly evident in the choice of featured songs, among them such signature tunes as “Happy Ever After,” “Porcelain,” “Manhattan Skyline,” “Falling Forward,” and “Concrete Love.” The vocal detail and sheer exuberance of these in-the-moment performances signal that Fordham comes fully alive onstage. Her devoted listeners will want this album; hopefully, they’ll play it for Fordham neophytes who are sure to become fans as well.
