Children's LiteraturePart of the "That's Our School" series, this book describes the daily events of Earl Carroll, a custodian at P.S. 87, Manhattan. The book explains many of the various activities and duties of a typical school custodian, as well as telling why each task is important. Besides introducing the responsibilities of a typical custodian, it also shows that custodians have lives outside of their schools. For example, this book shows that Earl "Speedo" Carroll used to be in a singing group called "The Cadillacs." This could benefit children by showing them that school custodians don't spend every moment at their school, instead they have other activities and interests. At the end of this book there are also some ideas on learning more about or doing something nice for the custodians in your school. However, one idea ("follow the custodian around the school for a morning") might not be practical in all situations. This is a good book for children who want to know more about the job of a school custodian. 2003, Millbrook Press, Ages 5 to 8.
