Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Part of the "That's Our School" series, this book describes the daily events of Maria Rodriguez who is a school librarian at P.S. 30, Bronx, New York. Morris explains the various duties of a school librarian—such as reading stories, finding information, checking in and out books, ordering books, using computers, and planning special events. As well as depicting the life of a school librarian, this book also gives a little bit of background on Maria Rodriguez. It tells about her family, what activities she enjoys doing with her children, and how she likes to go on vacation with her twin sister. This extra information on Mrs. Rodriguez could help to show readers that their school librarians have lives outside of the workplace, even if all librarians are not Mrs. Rodriguez. The book also has a "Things to Do" section with activities to help readers learn more about librarians. This book is a good choice for readers who are interesting in learning more about a school librarian's job. 2003, Millbrook Press, Ages 5 to 8.

School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-The first title features Maria Rodriguez, who helps the children in her Bronx school with computer searching, chooses books for the collection, and keeps records of the materials. The second title follows Lisa Shlansky throughout the day as she reads to her class, teaches them to measure, and talks with parents. What makes these "occupation" books unique is that they show the educators outside of their roles as well, with photographs of the librarian bowling with her family and the teacher grocery shopping. Each title has two pages of "Things to Do" to learn more about the profession. Abundant, sharp color photographs bring the information to life. Excellent for children wanting to learn more about the people who work in their school.-Anne Knickerbocker, formerly at Cedar Brook Elementary School, Houston, TX Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
