Overview

The best rock 'n' roll performers are at their peak onstage, giving their all in front of an audience. The King was no exception to that rule, as proven by this remarkable three-disc box of live performances culled from the intensely revitalized period he went through at the dawn of the '70s. Fans are certainly familiar with the contents of the set's first disc, which originally served as a companion to the 1970 doucmentary film that shares the box's title; these songs are a testament to Elvis's prowess as a song stylist. Shelving his more rock-oriented material in favor of such moodier pieces as "Bridge Over Troubled Water," "You Don't Have to Say You Love Me," and "Rags to Riches," the King reveals his more polished, controlled side here. Disc two, which was recorded at the same series of Las Vegas shows that produced the aforementioned special, is a bit more uptempo, offering live versions of Presley classics such as "Hound Dog" and "Mystery Train" as well as swinging renditions of then-current hits like "Sweet Caroline" and "Polk Salad Annie," which Elvis wastes no time in making his own. The third disc will be the most fascinating for aficionados. Drawn from rehearsals and casual performances, the disc's 25 songs serve as candid snapshots of a relaxed Elvis rarely seen by the public. You can practically see the cockeyed grin that no doubt accompanied "I Got a Woman" and "Santa Claus Is Back in Town," and there's no mistaking the heartfelt tone of "Oh Happy Day" and "Cottonfields." Even if you think you've heard Elvis Presley every way possible, this 66-song box set will show you more sides of the King than you'd ever imagine existed.

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Campbell
While not as ferocious as 1968's Elvis TV special or In Person at the International Hotel Las Vegas from 1969, this expanded 30th anniversary edition of the soundtrack to That's the Way It Is retains the excitement and exhaustion of his stage show of the time. The set is broken up into three separate discs. Disc one, special edition, includes the original 12-track album with seven bonus tracks taken from the same Las Vegas concerts and Nashville sessions. Disc two, the concert, includes the entire performance from the midnight show at the Las Vegas Hilton on August 12, 1970, consisting of mainly unreleased tracks highlighted by a rushed version of "Suspicious Minds," which finds the horn section falling behind an exhausted Elvis as he pushes the tempo. Disc three, the rehearsal, contains bits and pieces from these sessions; while interesting to hear once, the majority of it is not particularly memorable. This would have made an excellent two disc set, but remains enjoyable for even the casual Elvis fan.
