To appreciate this fine sampling, you would have to read the PsyCop series. Book 1 & 2 PsyCop Partners consists of 2 stories, Among the Living and Criss Cross, featuring 2 cops, one psychic and one "stiff" (non-psychic). Victor and Jacob, respectively. Book 3 & 4 is PsyCop Properties consisting of Body & Soul and Secrets. Book 5 is Camp Hell. Read these books and you will certainly appreciate thaw.

I really liked this short story. It has a believably tense sexual undercurrent and it made me want to know more about what the main character does for work.

Price is an author who understands that if a reader likes her characters, the reader is going to want to keep reading about them. And so, to tide us over between novels, she gifts us with a free snippet! This is a very considerate and generous move on the part of someone who writes for a living.
And this snippet is quite wonderful. It gives us a bit of background on the ever mysterious Victor Bayne, by letting us know about one small part of his childhood. We get a lovely moment of Chicago at night on a cold wintry evening. And, best of all, we get to see how Victor and Jacob are when they are not caught up in the serious, dangerous aspects of their jobs. These two guys, that Price's readers have come to adore, are simply having an evening out and enjoying the hell out of each other's company. I've read all the PysCop books and all the various shorts that are available. "Thaw" remains a favorite simply because it is nothing more than a glimpse into a very happy moment.
"Thaw" is charming.

I've read the whole series and its actually quite good. The writing style isn't written like a "illiterate kid" or "pre-adolescent". I have no clue where those people got that idea, or maybe its just them being homophobes. If you don't like gay fiction why read it? Did they even read the short? I really recommend reading the series first. It IS worth it!

More like a bad leaflet written by an illiterate kid. Don't even waste the time.

This free story is most appreciated if you read the PsyCop series. For a longer free (7) chapters on the first book of the series, PsyCop Partners, Among The Living.

Though not advertised this way, my guess is that this is part of a novel. It feels like they've taken five pages out of a book and labeled it as a short story. It's not even a chapter. How it relates to something called "PsyCop" is beyond me. It's two guys who get together and go ice skating. They are flirty, and seem nervous that people might discover they want to be together. Ok, that's nice. Why? Why are they nervous? What does this have to do with PsyCop, whatever that is? There is no beginning or end. It's not even a "slice of life" type story, since the whole of the events is just a few minutes.

Jordan Castillo never ceases to amaze me and only reaffirms my dislike of short stories. Thaw is great but leaves you hungry for more. Anyone who's familiar with the Psycop series should be able to appreciate the brief glimpse into Victor Bane's with Jacob. Thank you Jordan for another great fling...however brief!

Victor and Jacob have a romantic date ice skating. It wasn't enough to make me want to read the PsyCop series right now, but I may give it a chance and read the first book in the series at my leisure, to see if Jordan Castillo Price can get me hooked.

I know it's a free download, but after the teaser they give it's evident they can't expect you to pay for what's sent.
