Gatefold flaps conceal four calling birds (on the phone) in The 12 Days of Christmas: A Carol-and-Count Flap Book by Tad Hills. Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Children's Literature
Anita Pig is given the traditional gifts of the twelve days of Christmas by her beau, but quickly runs out of room in her tiny house. Following the traditional carol, Tad Hills comically illustrates each gift using a variety of animals in various roles. This is a lift-the-flap book so as each gatefold flap is turned the new gifts/animals are revealed and added to the ever-expanding menagerie. The fun of this book is in locating and counting each of the previous gifts. That said, this is not a particularly grand or impressive book especially when put in with all of the wonderful seasonal books available. 2002, Little Simon/Simon & Schuster, Ages 3 to 5.

PreS-Gr 2-This interpretation of the traditional song invites counting and offers surprises through the use of a gatefold on each reinforced, sturdy spread. The lovers are dainty-footed pigs who sport many changes of clothing and a variety of wonderfully evoked expressions as the house is overrun by each day's gifts. To very funny effect, the illustrations feature mice as the maids-a-milking, kangaroos as the pipers piping, etc., adding to the havoc. Original, clever, amusing, and interactive.-S. P. The 12 Days of Christmas by Tad Hills was a really cute book with the real lyrics to the 12 Days of Christmas song.  The gifts are really being given and they are taking over all available space.  My 7 year old loved it and insisted on singing her way through the story without anyone helping or singing along.  I give the story 5 stars - the illustrations are perfect and add valuable insight into the song. I received a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

This is a WONDERFUL version of a classic and one that both kids and adults will love. The illustrations and animations are so unique and clever, and the sing-along is fun for the whole family. This is a "must" for the holidays and is sure to be a family favorite.

My 6 year old and I love this book. We've have been reading it every year for several years now. The artwork is beautiful. The artist has rendered such cute animals and used them in very funny situations. Reading, counting and singing to this book have become a holiday tradition!
