Everyone knows "The Twelve Days of Christmas," but are you ready for The Thirteen Days of Halloween? In this delightfully offbeat story, a dashing ghoul tries to win his ghostly love's heart with heaps of hilarious gifts ranging from broomsticks and bats to cauldrons and cats! Carol Greene's lively verse is perfectly complemented by Tim Raglin's enchantingly erie illustrations. Children of all ages will love to sing along. The result is a frightfully funny Halloween tale you'll never forget.

Carol Greene wrote her first poem when she was six years old (it was about a spider). To date she has published over a hundred books for children. Carol also likes to read, sing, and make teddy bears. She lives in Webster Groves, Missouri, with her cat Dulcie.

Tim Raglin brings his wacky imagination and wonderfully odd cast of characters to The Thirteen Days of Halloween. His previous books include Five Funny Fights, Pecos Bill, and The Birthday ABC. He received a silver medal from the New York Society of Illustrators for his book Uncle Mugsy & the Terrible Twins of Christmas. Mr. Raglin lives in his hometown of Independence, Kansas.

A Halloween version of "The Twelve Days of Christmas," featuring such seasonal gifts as bats, goblins, spiders, worms, and ghosts.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
The classic Christmas song "The Twelve Days of Christmas" takes on a whole new twist in this imaginative, humorous version that you and your kindergarten class, will quickly be singing along to. Halloween is the holiday in this case. In the story we find a dashing ghoul trying to win the heart of what appears to be a charming, offbeat ghost. His offer starts the first refrain with the gift of 'a vulture in a dead tree.' It increases up the counting scale from giggling ghosts and fat toads to seven spiders creeping and six owls a screeching. Naturally we think the end will come with the twelve cauldrons bubbling. But wait, the title is "The 13 Days of Halloween!" The lady ghost's final response on the thirteenth day surprises the reader who likely has been giggling their whole way through. The absurdly combined scary, yet funny illustrations are a reminder that just sometimes, it is fun to be scared! 2000, BridgeWater Books, $15.95. Ages 4 to 8. Reviewer: Kathleen Orosz
School Library Journal
PreS-Gr 2-Greene's holiday rhyme loosely based on "The 12 Days of Christmas" has been given sprightly new illustrations. A green ghoul is wooed by a similarly colored male that first offers her "a vulture in a dead tree." And so the courting continues on each double-page spread. Kids will have fun counting the different offerings, from "two hissing cats" and "three fat toads" to "six owls a-screeching" and "ten goblins gobbling." Then, on the 11th day, they can sort out the confusion that suddenly erupts from the mass of flying objects in the crowded sky. The tables are turned on the 13th day, when the narrator now invites the "good friend" to tea, and-with mounting suspense-gives "A real, live-." Readers are asked to guess what the 13 final presents might be. This ending will require adult explanation, as young readers may not understand their role in the story. Raglin's art brings the text to life through creepy pen-and-ink drawings that are drawn in muted color against a dull, but multi-toned background, a color scheme that suits the story. Picture books on this subject abound, but the idea of the 13 days gives this book a unique twist.-Elizabeth Maggio, Palos Verdes Library District, Rolling Hills Estates, CA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
