The 1930's: The Small Combos

Editorial Reviews

All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
Swing is the thing on this very enjoyable sampler which features 16 recordings by the same number of groups. Most of the combos are pickup bands but the quality of musicianship is so high that they sound like regularly working groups. Represented by a song apiece are Jack Purvis, the Chocolate Dandies, the Rhythmakers, Red Allen, Wingy Manone, Red Norvo, Jones-Smith Inc, Stuff Smith, Teddy Wilson, Roy Eldridge, Cootie Williams, the Gotham Stompers, Frankie Newton, Sidney Bechet, Chu Berry and John Kirby. Although one would prefer the complete sessions, this sampler serves as a perfect introduction to these brilliant players.
