Overview

Each title in this series looks at the key dates that helped shape history during a particular decade in the 20th century. As well as describing landmark events, the books examine their causes and consequences and include contemporary newspaper reports and eyewitness accounts.

The 9160s was a time of political and social upheaval, with the Cuban Missile Crisis, Civil Rights, the Vietnam War, and student riots in Europe and the United States. It was also the time of the Cultural Revolution in China, Beatlemania, the moon landing, and Woodstock. This book describes these and many other world-changing events that occurred during this decade.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Janis Flint-Ferguson
This nonfiction account of the 1960s decade begins with the March massacre in Sharpeville, South Africa, and carries readers through the political and cultural events through the 1969 start of the Woodstock Music and Art Fair. The first eighteen "chapters" cover significant events from world history and the final three focus specifically on US events: the start of the women's movement, the start of culture's understanding of poverty, and the first Super Bowl. Although full discussions of these events are not included, this is a great way to introduce upper middle school students to the history of the decade, covering everything from political events to the cultural event of the Beatles, the military actions in places such as Cuba, Viet Nam, Israel, and Ireland. Each chapter gives the date, the basic details in a two page spread, and photos. Included in a side bar are eyewitness accounts of the event, another that connects the event details to other events in the decade, and resources for more information. This is part of a series that includes the decades of 1950 through 1990 and which will be a valuable resource for school and classroom libraries. Reviewer: Janis Flint-Ferguson
