The 1970s

Overview

The 1970s was a time of détente, an easing of Cold War tensions, and a historic visit by President Nixon to China. The conflict in the Middle East led to international terrorist incidents and a major oil crisis. Iran erupted in revolution, space probes landed on Mars, and the Sex Pistols shocked the establishment. This book describes these and many other world-changing events of this decade.

Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Annie Laura Smith
This book is one of five in the series titled "Dates Of A Decade" which cover the decades beginning in the 1950s and continuing through the 1990s, the second half of the twentieth century. Politics, music, war, technology, events, culture, people, science, and revolution are addressed. A table of contents denotes "Global Events and United States Events" by dates of their occurrences. The events, which helped shape history during the 1970s, are shown through contemporary newspaper reports and eyewitness accounts. The authors examine the causes and consequences of the respective events. The book begins with the report of three airliners hijacked by Palestinians, passengers taken hostage, and the planes blown up in the Jordanian Desert. This event introduced a period that became a decade of terrorism. Photographs and notes supplement the text throughout the book. Brief biographies of "People of the Decade" are listed in the back of the book and include notable individuals from sports, politics, entertainment, fashion, and religion. A glossary defines relative terms of the decade. An index provides easy navigation through the book. Reviewer: Annie Laura Smith
