Lane and Hasten demystify the syndication world for aspiring and experienced feature writers and cartoonists. Their directory provides general information on 250-plus syndicates, including guidelines and whether or not submissions are being accepted. (Often the answer is no.) One is brutally frank--``Never''--and another self-promotes: ``Have a 50-page book on How to Self-Syndicate for $5.00.'' Some executives are interviewed in depth in a separate section; most are asked similar questions. The answers are articulate though not always encouraging. (A text editor replies that breaking into syndication is harder than becoming a stage or film star.) There is also a list of best-selling and recently added features/cartoons, a directory of the 100 largest newspapers, and detailed guidelines for submissions, including examples of cover letters. Warning: Although the authors allude to this problem, the names of newspaper editors are out of date and should be double-checked.
