Gr 5-7-If thoughts of slithering in the grass and the quick strike of needle-like fangs cause cold sweat, then it's West Bengal, India. If the unseen depths of the sea elicit nightmares, it's the Marianas Trench, off Guam. For those who are particularly sensitive to natural dangers or ghostly appearances, these and 23 additional sites around the world could provide the ultimate fright. Half of the two or three-page descriptions retell often published accounts of hauntings at places like the Tower of London, Salem, MA, and Alcatraz. Some sources of ghost stories are mentioned, but the volume as a whole lacks a bibliography. A few of the scary places are offered as mysteriously dangerous sites "proven" by a list of fatal accidents and horrifying incidents that occurred there. Black-and-white drawings sport just enough dramatic enhancement to remove all doubt about the creepiness of each subject. There is no index to place or personal names. Average fare for armchair travelers with active imaginations.Ann G. Brouse, Steele Memorial Library, Elmira, NY
