Overview

In a series that explores the logic-defying comebacks and tough losses, the dramatic interceptions, fumbles, game-winning field goals, and touchdowns that shape a fan’s greatest memories of their beloved team, this book does not disappoint as the ultimate collector’s item for Giants fans. It chronicles the most famous moments in the New York Giants’ football history, including the shocking upset of Super Bowl XLII, Pat Summerall's 49-yard field goal in the snow in 1958, Phil Simms’ fourth down and 17 strike against the Vikings in 1986, defeating the 49ers on the final play in 1991, and Lawrence Taylor's 97-yard interception return to defeat the Lions on Thanksgiving. The descriptions of each play are accompanied with game information and quotes from participants, players, and observers with firsthand accounts.

Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

In 50 chapters, Maxymuk (reference librarian, Rutgers Univ.; Uniform Numbers of the NFL: All-Time Rosters, Facts and Figures) ranks and describes the plays that he has selected as the greatest in Giants history. With key descriptions of the games in which these plays occurred, diagrams of the plays, and full contextual game details, he weaves in quotes from those involved on and off the field, and numerous game day photos. Although most of these top plays contributed toward a positive outcome for the Giants (e.g., Super Bowl victories), there are some "disasters that Giants fans would like to forget" also included here (e.g., the 1978 fumble against the Eagles). This thorough book, by an expert, will naturally be most appreciated by New York Giants fans, but general NFL-crazed enthusiasts will also enjoy it, as will some history buffs. Recommended for libraries with large sports collections and all libraries serving Giants fans. [The author is a longtime reviewer of sports books for LJ.-Ed.]

For Any Giants Fan Or History Buff

Its no doubt in bad taste for one of those few mentioned on the acknowledgment page to review a book but this is truly one for the Giants fan. When a historical perspective is written by an academic researcher skilled in his profession, one that can craft a communicative dialogue, and has a burning passion for the team and sport he is writing about, you have a winner. The presentations of 50 Greatest Plays is a presentation of Giants history, nicely illustrated, with a wonderful balance of the old and new that will appeal to fans of the Giants and pro football that will span the appreciation from Mel Hein through the Gifford-Huff-Tittle years, with plenty for the contemporary fan who has enjoyed LT and the 2007 season Super Bowl Championship. In short, any football or football history lover will want this book.
