Overview

A multi-volume retrospective of the pop-vocalists era (although neither volume is individually designated from the other; a curious twist or perhaps a mere oversight), the first entry into the series features a 16-track collection of sides from male singers who recorded with success primarily for Decca and Coral Records. Make no mistake about it, there is nothing remotely rock & roll about any of these sides; this is lush, romantic pop music of the highest order, the pre-Elvis side of the '50s equation. The compilation starts right on the cusp of the decade with big-band singer Dick Haymes contributing five tracks to the fray, including the pop hit version of "Room Full of Roses" and duets with Eileen Wilson and Ethel Merman. Next up is Alan Dale, still a year or so away from playing fake rocker Arnie Haynes in the Alan Freed/Bill Haley movie Don't Knock the Rock doing business with "Cherry Pink and Apple Blossom White" and a trio effort with Buddy Greco and Johnny Desmond on the jaunty and venerable "East Side, West Side." Which sets the stage perfectly for big-voiced Johnny Desmond with his big hit, "The High and the Mighty." Closing things out are four tracks from pop smoothie Don Cherry, culling three of his early-'50s Decca singles and one stray Columbia side, his 1955 pop hit, "Band of Gold." A nice collection of sides seldom heard anywhere today.
