Children's Literature - Della A. Yannuzzi
Author Kalman has written a nonfiction, 32-page picture book using the alphabet to describe endangered animals. For example, the first chapter is Animals in danger! Second—Big bats, small bats, Chimpanzees and so forth throughout the alphabet. Illustrations are colorful and large. Some of the endangered species in this book are apes, elephants, leopards, monkeys, sea turtles and many more. Written text describes why the animals are endangered. For example, 30 years ago red wolves were extinct in the wild, but a few of them are being raised in captivity. Tigers are endangered due to loss of forests and polluted land and water where tigers live. Sea turtles are killed for their beautiful shells and meat. Back material includes information about how people can help by learning about endangered animals and telling others how they can help keep the environment clean. A glossary is also included. Kalman has authored a nice book about the Natural World that will help children, parents, and teachers learn more about animals in trouble. Reviewer: Della A. Yannuzzi

K-Gr 4—These titles vary in their usefulness and complexity. Consistency is a problem. In Continents, seven places are named at the beginning under "The 'A' Continents" when only six begin with that letter, and the "Q" entry is "Quartz," which is a bit specific for a book on this topic. Similarly, the first chapter of Animals is "Animals in Danger," but "Rhinoceros" represents "R." In all of the titles, specific names of things, insects, continents, or animals are mixed with generalized categories like "Habitat loss," for "H" in Environment. The books are visually appealing, with color photos on every page, and include a variety of children, animals, and natural environments. They might expose children to new words and curious creatures, but they're strictly additional purchases.—Erlene Bishop Killeen, Stroughton Area School District, WI
