Overview

The Academy: Tales of the Marketplace continues the brilliant saga of resolute slaves and exacting owners begun in previous volumes (The Marketplace, The Slave, The Trainer). A dynamic culture of honor and duty embracing absolute servitude is the basis for the clandestine society known as The Marketplace. Sensuality, intelligence, and passion meld into exquisite eroticism and scenes of blazing sexuality and sexual diversity. The Marketplace is full of all kinds of slaves and trainers, of all genders and sexual tastes.

In "The Academy" we follow Chris Parker and his trainee, Michael LaGuardia, to Japan, where a conclave of trainers is taking place. While the trainers swap cautionary tales and debate protocol, moves are being made that may change the Marketplace, and Chris's place in it, forever. This complete, full-length novel is a rich tapestry of sexuality and emotion, augmented by the inclusion of short stories by guest authors Karen Taylor, Cecilia Tan, Michael Hernandez, david stein, and Christian Muncy.

This print-on-demand paperback brings back into print the best-selling book formerly published by Mystic Rose books. Under Circlet Press's "Luster Editions" imprint, all the books in the series are now available to bookstores everywhere, and a brand new sequel, The Inheritor, is forthcoming in 2013.

In this volume, Antoniou, with a little help from her friends, creates a sort of Arabian Nights of the Marketplace, with individual stories woven into a larger tale full of political intrigue, difficult choices, and of course, searingly hot sex. There’s nothing else like this is in the world of erotic writing.

Meet the Author

Laura Antoniou has become well known in the erotically alternative community as the creator of the Marketplace series (The Marketplace, The Slave, The Trainer, The Academy, and The Reunion), the first three volumes of which were originally published under the name Sara Adamson. One Marketplace character also appears in her first book, The Catalyst, but she leaves the reader to figure that out. The only independently written Marketplace short story, “Brian on the Farm,” appears in Lawrence Schimel and Carol Queen’s ground-breaking anthology, Switch Hitters: Lesbians Write Gay Male Erotica, and Gay Men Write Lesbian Erotica (Cleis), which has been published in English and in German. “That’s Harsh,” a new Marketplace story that appears as a bonus story in The Slave (Book Two of the Marketplace) won the 2011 John Preston Short Fiction award, presented by the National Leather Association.

The characters in this series of books are well-realized and interesting. Even though it's erotica, and won't appeal to everyone, the plot-lines and created world elevate it way beyond simple smut. (Which, I admit, is really fun to read, but not that engrossing.)

In this, the fourth book of the Marketplace series, the creator and editor has generously opened her universe for other author’s stories and characters. In well written and steamy vignettes, each comprising a single chapter, guest author’s such as Cecilia Tan, M. Christian, Karen Taylor and Michael Hernandez, add to both new and back ground information to the story of a young trainer in training trying to find his way. Antoniou’s courage in allowing others to write in her world is well placed and exquisitely edited into her main storyline. The long awaited history of Chris Parker is told with exacting care and respect for a character that has become both loved and feared by fans. If you were thinking grabbing a copy of 50 Shades of Grey, put it back and pick up the Marketplace books, they’re better written and hotter too!
