He sets his sights on Bonnie's best friend, Elaine, mother of Josh's best friend, Max. The boys meddle and grow up as Tom's attempts to win Elaine are confounded by an old secret concerning the identity of Max's father.

When Tom Greenwood is killed in a freak accident just as his son Josh's 14th birthday party is ending, Bonnie must team up with Elaine and another friend Indra to try to thwart persistent attempts by Bonnie's half-brother Mitch to drag Josh into his life of petty crime. Bonnie's mother, Juliet, only makes matters worse and the effects spill over into Elaine and Max's lives, and by extension into the presidential campaign of Max's real father.

When Josh Greenwood is killed in a freak accident just as his 14th birthday party is ending, his Dad struggles to find meaning in his death (or, as my daughter put it after reading the manuscript, "goes a little wackadoodle"). Tom and Bonnie's marriage teeters and they each find a new career path, while across the street, Max and Elaine confront Max's father directly and forthrightly this time with surprising results that ultimately affect the whole country.
