CHAPTER 1

Once upon a time, in a forest not far from where you live, stood a large oak tree. At the bottom of this oak tree was a little red door. Behind this red door lived a family of mice—Bibole, the son; Rivol, the father; and Michelle, the mother.

It was a beautiful Saturday morning, and all the animals were out playing in the open field. The animals loved Saturdays because it was a day that Daisy didn't have to go to school. Bibole and his friends loved Daisy. It seemed all the animals had a lot more fun when Daisy was around.

Bibole and his friends seemed to laugh harder when Daisy played with them, after they played a long game of tag. Bibole, Daisy, and the rest of their friends lay down on the grassy field, laughing and pointing at the different shapes of clouds they would see high over their heads.

On that beautiful summer's day, as they all stared upward looking at the clouds, with his keen vision, Marsell the skunk saw something no one else could see.

"Look! Up there!" Marsell pointed straight up over their heads.

"What is it?" Daisy asked.

The other animals got quiet as they all stared upward, trying to see what Marsell saw.

"Whatever it is, it's coming right at us fast!"

Bibole, Daisy, Bonny the bunny, and Hurman sat up and said all at once, "We see it!"

"Everybody, DUCK!" Daisy yelled out.

All the animals hit the ground, covering their heads. As they did so ... like a jet, the biggest bird they had ever seen flew over them, crashing and rolling. The large bird came to a final stop. As the dust and feathers slowly settled to the ground, Bibole and his friends ran to see what they thought was a dead bird.

Daisy looked carefully at the large bird lying facedown in the grass. All the wide-eyed animals looked to see what Daisy was going to do. Not knowing what to do, Daisy told

Bibole to get his parents. Daisy learned that when in doubt, call a parent.

Bonny the bunny, with tears in her eyes, cried out, "Is the big bird dead?"

"I don't know," Daisy said sadly.

Hurman, cleaning his glasses because the tears kept fogging them up, said, "He's gone. Nothing could live through that kind of landing."

Bibole's parents, Rivol and Michelle, came running as fast as they could. As they arrived, Michelle told all the others to back away and give her some room. Michelle slowly opened the eye of the large bird.

As she did, the large bird's eye looked back at Michelle.

The large bird quickly sat up and screamed, "AAAAHHHH!"

Daisy and all the other animals jumped back, and they also screamed, "AAAAHHHH!"

Then everyone screamed, "AAAAHHHH!"

When everyone was done screaming, the large bird shook his dizzy head and said, "Wow! Now, that was a heavy basket!"

Michelle, still shaken from what seemed to be one of the scariest things that had ever happened to her and probably anyone else in the forest, asked the very large bird, "Who are you? And what are you doing in this part of the forest?"

"Forest! I'm not supposed to be in a forest! Isn't this Africa?"

All the animals looked at one another. "Africa?"

"No!" The large bird then shook its head. "That does it! I QUIT! That basket was too heavy anyway!"

Bibole then yelled out as the large bird started to fly away, "Basket! What basket?"

As the large bird flew away, it pointed to the forest. Slowly, everyone turned to look in the direction of the forest. As everyone stared, Hurman then asked, "What kind of bird was that?"

Daisy then said, "It's a stork."

"Okay, what's a stork?"

Michelle then said, "A stork is like a crane."

Hurman, still not sure, asked, "What is it doing with a basket? Was it going on a picnic?"

"No," Michelle said. "Storks are the ones that bring babies."

Everyone got quiet. Once again, everyone looked toward the forest. As all the animals and Daisy realized what was happening, they all turned and ran to the forest.

As Daisy and all the animals looked for the basket, they heard a strange sound coming from behind a large tree. It was a sound no one had ever heard before, not even Daisy.

They gathered around the basket, then Daisy slowly lifted the top off.
