Chapter One

Many years ago, a little boy named Al lived in a small southern town along the Mississippi River. People there were mostly plant and factory workers. The town grew and became one of the busiest cities in the south, and capital of the midsouth. It was the world's largest spot cotton market, and home to the cotton carnival. He lived with his mother, father, and grandmother. In those days, most boys and girls had pets. Al had two wonderful pets. One was a goat named Billy, the other a dog named Ras. Billy was large with horns, black and brown in color. Ras was a small rat terrier brown and white in color.

One day, some of Al's friends who lived a few streets behind him came over to play. They brought their dogs along. Billy was in the backyard under the big oak tree, and Ras was lying on the porch in Al's grandmother's big rocking chair. The other dogs tried to make Ras move. They even jumped on him. Ras tried to protect himself, but he couldn't. All the boys saw what was happening but were at a distance playing in a tree house. They couldn't reach Ras in time to help, but Billy did in his way.

Billy, who was chained to the big oak tree, watched as the other dogs jumped Ras. When he couldn't stand watching it any longer, he broke the chain and ran to help Ras. Billy was very angry. He began butting the other dogs with his head and using his horns to toss them into the air.

This was very frightening to see animals flying through the air, but none of them were seriously injured.

They were just frightened and ran away. Ras felt safe now, and he was happy that Billy had helped him. They lay down under the tree and took a nap in the shade.

They were the best of friends and always looked out for each other. Billy and Ras always played together and never fought. They loved to play ball. Al would throw the ball, and Billy and Ras would run to get it. Ras always returned the ball to Al. They liked to run and chase each other. They were a very unusual pair, but they enjoyed each other very much.
