Mr. Smallbeer broke into laughter as I struggled against the ropes that bound me from head to toe. I glared up at him from the deck. If I could only kick him in the shin. I pressed with all my might against the ropes, trying to break the knots. He was enjoying himself enormously. "Do you know what you look like?" he said between laughs. "You look like a seal in a straitjacket! Ha! Were you planning to swim all the way to China?" Captivated by Romance!
He followed her up the stairs to a balcony that overlooked the courtyard. But she stopped short of the glass doors. The candles were dark, and the only light came from the red sun filtering through the curtains. He caught up with Teresa and grabbed her by the shoulders. She wheeled about to confront him.
"What do you want from me?"Caught up in War!
A broad field spread out before us. Many of our soldiers crouched in the surrounding forest, waiting to ambush the rebels. Beyond them, the deep snow was trackless. Beside me on the ramparts stood our last line of defense-the mountain men, the Sherpas, loyal to the last man.
