Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

Captain Underpants first catapulted into literary history on September 1st 1997. The first illustrated epic Underpants novel by Caldecott Honor Award winner Dav Pilkey tickled America's funny bone and launched a series of Jerome Horwitz classics that continues to this day. Now the progenitor of all this hilarity emerges as in full radiant color as never before seen. Dr. Diaper will never be so humiliated.

From the Publisher

"For every downtrodden fun-seeking kid who never wanted to read a book." --SCHOOL LIBRARY JOURNAL

"Subversively hilarious." --PUBLISHERS WEEKLY

"Celebrates the triumph of the good-hearted." --The Educational Book and Media Association

"It'll make kids laugh until soda comes out of their noses." --BULLETIN OF THE CENTER FOR CHILDREN'S BOOKS

Children's Literature - Magi Evans
George and Harold are their school's most prolific pranksters. During just one football game, they managed to put pepper in the cheerleaders' pompoms, bubbles in the marching band's instruments, itching cream in the team's muscle pain lotion, and helium in the football. Furthermore, they invented Captain Underpants and drew comics about his adventures for the amusement of their classmates. But Principal Krupp really hates the Captain Underpants comics, and he is not amused by the pranks. With a videotape of George and Harold perpetrating their pranks at the football game, he blackmails them into becoming model students and doing his household chores. His plan backfires when the boys choose him as the target of their next prank. Using George's 3-D Hypno-Ring, the pair hypnotizes Principal Krupp into believing that he is Captain Underpants, and he takes off in search of criminals to thwart. Now it is up to George and Harold to save Principal Krupp from himself (and the criminals) and bring him out of hypnosis (after purloining the incriminating videotape, of course). But George and Harold miss a key paragraph in the Hypno-Ring's instructions, thus opening the door to the many sequels Pilkey has published. Part chapter book, part flip book, and part graphic novel, this book was originally published in 1997, much to the delight of young boys who love bathroom jokes and anything to do with underwear. In this edition, Pilkey has added a chapter detailing how he invented Captain Underpants at age eight, as a student given to antics similar to those of George and Harold. The once-monochromatic illustrations have been updated to full-color versions, ensuring that this edition will thrill the current crop of youngsters even more than the original did. Librarians will be happy with the improved paper quality of this colorful edition, which will last longer during the numerous checkouts that are bound to occur. Reviewer: Magi Evans
