Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Ramirose I. Attebury
Affable and likeable, Marco Flamingo is a bird with a thirst for adventure. When on his birthday, he receives a special invitation from his friend Elephant to join him in the jungle for an exploratory expedition, Marco jumps at the chance. Braving a stormy sea, he sets out across the ocean toward the jungle. Arriving gratefully in Elephant's lush home, Marco immediately begins his educational adventure. He visits a watering hole filled with friendly jungle animals. He splashes in the mud with the hippos, and gets washed off by the baby elephants. He cavorts with surprisingly amicable wild beasts, like Lion and Hyena, and at the end of the day, he witnesses a beautiful sunset with his friend Elephant. The only thing that could make it better to Marco is to have his flamingo friends experience it, too. On the final page of the story, much to his surprise, Marco sees his three best flamingo friends racing toward him to join him on his jungle adventure, and readers are left to imagine the fun they will have meeting other interesting creatures. Simple, easy-to-read bilingual text that is adequate for telling the story is accompanied by colorful and engaging illustrations. This book would fit well in any school or public library, and could easily be enjoyed by independent readers or reading buddies. Reviewer: Ramirose I. Attebury

PreS-Gr 2—It's Marco Flamingo's birthday and Elephant gives him the best gift of all-an invitation to a jungle safari. Marco sets sail on his adventure but runs out of food and his boat capsizes; fortunately, he discovers that land is close enough for him to fly in safely. Many of the illustrations are laugh-out-loud funny. Marco plays ring toss with the giraffes, buries his head in the sand with an ostrich, and roars along with a lion, showing off his bird tongue and crooked beak. Although there are references to Marco Flamingo (2008), and Marco Flamingo Under the Sea (2009, both Raven Tree), this bilingual picture book works well as a stand-alone title. The Spanish text matches the English in tone and reading level. The short list of vocabulary words at the end of the book includes articles so that readers can tell whether the Spanish words are masculine or feminine.—Rebecca Hickman, Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, FL
