Editorial Reviews

School Library Journal
Gr 1-3-- Tabby, a cat, lives in Kibbletown where ``the dogs are mean, and the cats are scared.'' In an attempt to avert the canine peril, Tabby creates a costume convincing enough to get him invited to a dog show by a big growler named Beauford. Disaster strikes when Tabby's costume is accidentally torn off. He is rescued, however, by a friendly mouse and they both return home safely. The picture book format and lengthy text make this slight adventure difficult to categorize. The flat watercolor cartoons are quite without proportion or perspective. The visual and textual word play will be beyond the understanding of most preschoolers. The cat is shown using a ``Zinger'' sewing machine (from the wrong side); at the Club, everyone sings ``You Ain't Nothing But a Hound Dawg''; the emcee is ``Burt Barks''; and a fat basset sings an aria from a ``Poochini'' opera. An animated reading by an adult might make this story work, but it's not worth the effort. --Virginia Opocensky, formerly at Lincoln City Libraries, NB
