Sir Arthur Conan Doyle (1859–1930) created the most famous detective in the history of English literature, Sherlock Holmes, with the novel "A Study in Scarlet" in 1887. Holmes would appear in four other novels and dozens of more short stories published in the pages of the Strand Magazine and collected in four compilations, including the first two, "The Adventures of Sherlock Holmes" and "The Memoirs of Sherlock Holmes." Conan Doyle also created a series of novels around the character of Professor George Challenger, the most enduring of which was "The Lost World."
