"I know now as well as I did thirty years ago that The Alice B. Toklas Cook Book would feed my soul abundantly if I could find no other nourishment, just as it would make me smile in the midst of sadness, and feel braver if I risked faltering."--from the Foreword by M. F. K. Fisher

This is not only a fascinating look at France during the early part of the 20th century, with some wonderful tales about ex-patriots, Alice Toklas and Gertrude Stein (told from Alice's point of view), but the recipes are wonderful. I've made quite a few, and while they may not all be 'health-conscious,' they are delicious. This is for literature lovers, history lovers and foodies. Highly recommended.
