Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature - Jamie Hain
Most men dream of sharing their passion with their family, especially their sons. Bobby Allison is one man lucky enough to have realized that dream several times over. When he first started racing with his brother Donnie, and then later when both of his sons Davey and Clifford grew up and found their own way onto the race track. This book gives readers a look at the Allison family of racers and their amazing ability to handle the rewards—multiple big race wins and millions in prize money, and the heartaches: career ending injuries and loss of life—that accompany such a dangerous sport. Part of the "Race Car Legends Collector's Edition" series, this book includes an index of famous tracks, events, and racers, a glossary of sport related terms, and a section listing further reading and website suggestions. A racing chronology of the Allison family and their individual career statistics provides readers a quick reference guide to the Allisons' involvement in the world of racing. A combination of family and racing photos along with informational inserts about the sport make this book a good choice for reluctant readers interested in racing. Reviewer: Jamie Hain
School Library Journal
Gr 6-9These two series entries aimed at racing aficionados bring some fresh material to a dated area of most libraries. However, the colorful covers raise expectations that are soon deflated by occasionally fuzzy, dark, black-and-white photos and rather bland writing. The outer page margins are extremely wide and the narrow inner margins draw readers' eyes toward the gutter (some photos edge into it). Both titles reveal the drive, endurance, and super-quick reflexes necessary to succeed at this high-speed sport. Both include pages of career statistics, chronologies, and further readings and videos, and are indexed to assist researchers. The Allisons chronicles the racing careers, and little else, of brothers Bobby and Donnie (both forced to retire by severe injuries), and Bobby's sons Davey and Clifford (both killed in racing-related accidents). Mario Andretti includes more personal material as well as career highlights, and is written in a livelier style. Acceptable reading during ESPN commercials for those who thrill to the roar of finely tuned engines and the smell of hot carburetors.Patricia Manning, formerly at Eastchester Public Library, NY
