Overview

With last year's publication of his New York Times bestseller The Company, Robert Littell reestablished his position as one of our top writers of intelligent, ironic, and always entertaining espionage thrillers. After many years The Amateur, a cult classic among aficionados, is finally available again as Overlook republishes Littell's best.

In this "first-rate thriller" (Chicago Tribune), Charlie Heller is an ace cryptographer for the Company. He's a quiet man with a quiet job in a back office. But when terrorists shoot his fiancée in cold blood and Heller learns that the Agency has decided not to pursue those responsible, his life takes an abrupt turn. He was not a blackmailer but he will force the CIA's hand. He was not an assassin but he will penetrate the Iron Curtain with the intent to kill. Driven by an obsessive need for revenge, targeted for elimination by the CIA itself, Heller is an amateur with a one-in-a-million chance of success.

Author Biography: Robert Littell is the bestselling author of thirteen novels, published in twelve languages around the world. His most recent, the New York Times bestseller The Company has just been published in paperback by Penguin. A former Newsweek journalist, Robert Littell was born in New York.

Editorial Reviews

Chicago Tribune
A first rate thriller ... Littell is a terrific writer.
Los Angeles Times
One of the best ... a thoroughly professional and surprise-filled work.
The New York Times Book Review
A taut, chilling plot and a protagonist as memorable as one of Len Deighton's, or le Carré's Smiley.
Library Journal
Initially released in 1981 and 1973, respectively, these are two Cold War cat-and-mouse games from Littell, whose reputation has grown greatly since their original publication. The Amateur finds a CIA codebreaker embarking on a personal journey of revenge against adversaries as adept at killing as he is at decryption. A.J. Lewinter seemingly is willing to sell U.S. military secrets to the Russians, but his defection may be a ploy to get him into the Kremlin's confidence. Littell is hot, so jump on these. Meet the Author

Robert Littell was born, raised, and educated in New York. A former Newsweek editor specializing in Soviet affairs, he left journalism in 1970 to write fiction full time. Connoisseurs of the spy novel have elevated Robert Littell to the genre's highest ranks, and Tom Clancy wrote that “if Robert Littell didn’t invent the spy novel, he should have.” He is the author of fifteen novels, including the New York Times bestseller The Company and Legends, the 2005 L.A. Times Book Award for Best Thriller/Mystery. He currently lives in France.

Good To Know

About his past, Littell told us, "No account of my education would be complete without mentioning my four years in the Navy; I served on board the USS John R. Pierce (DD753) where I was, variously, the ship’s navigator, antisubmarine warfare officer, communications officer and deck watch officer. These years were extremely formative for me."
