Editorial Reviews

Library Journal
Debut author Ross gives an overview of the role of acid and alkaline foods in maintaining a healthy diet. According to her, most of us consume too much acid-forming food, such as meat and sugar, and too little alkaline-forming food, like fruit and vegetables. Combine the right amount of acid and alkaline foods along with proper fluid intake and regular exercise, she writes, and one can achieve optimum health. The book opens with the basics of a pH-balanced lifestyle, including a comprehensive chart of a variety of foods and their acidifying or alkalizing qualities. Along with a list of necessary ingredients for a well-stocked kitchen, Ross includes over 140 tested recipes for breakfast, lunch, and dinner. VERDICT Many cooks may not want to make a trip to a specialty grocer for spelt and amaranth flours, sucanat sugar, and almond milk. Still, the recipes, e.g., Cinnamon Raisin Bread, Buckwheat Pancakes, Linguini and Clam Sauce, and Moo Shu Pork, are appealing and easy to make. The comprehensive guide to acid and alkaline foods alone makes this book well worth purchasing.—Phyllis Goodman, West Chester Lib., OH
