PreS-Gr 2-- Teddy Tum Tum is a born storyteller, making a backyard excursion feel like a perilous journey complete with yellow-eyed monsters (a cat) and fierce hunters of the Bongo Bongo tribe (two children). A rainy day is just the right occasion for such a tale, and the other household toys are happy to listen to Tum Tum's hair-raising adventure. Rose-Anne the rag doll is especially attentive, and her childlike interruptions help to heighten suspense. Unfortunately, the grand, convincing excitement is diminished by the realistic illustrations that remind readers that they are on the outside looking in; the soft, muted tones speak strictly to the lighter side of this tale, and don't let the toys' fantasy rule. Despite this flaw, this story will appeal to fans of Jane Hissey's ``Old Bear'' books (Philomel). --Martha Topol, Northwestern Michigan College, Traverse City, MI
