Overview

To hear pianist Bud Powell struggle through three highly distinct takes of "Un Poco Loco" is to hear genius at work. As Powell, drummer Max Roach and bassist Curley Russell try out different tempos and rhythms, the pianist's improvisations on the extended modal framework take on different colors and attitudes -- each different, each outstanding in its own way. Sharing space with the trio tracks is another Powell small group session that couldn't be any more different yet was just as successful. Uniting the trumpeter Fats Navarro, drummer Roy Haynes, Russell, and a teenage tenor saxophonist named Sonny Rolllins, Powell assembled a world class bop band -- their performances more than match their individual reputations. Blasting into three of Powell's most memorable compositions -- "Dance of the Infidels," "Bouncing With Bud," and " Wail," and Thelonious Monk's "52nd Street Theme" -- this ad hoc quintet produces some of the most disciplined and inspired work of the time; the ensembles come together like adhesive glue, the solos are short, sweet and killing. Together these two sessions give a nicely rounded picture of bop ecstasy in action.

All Music Guide - Scott Yanow
This CD gives one a strong sampling of pianist Bud Powell at his best. Powell is heard on a classic session with trumpeter Fats Navarro and tenor saxophonist Sonny Rollins (which is highlighted by exciting versions of "Dance of the Infidels," "52nd Street Theme," and "Bouncing With Bud") and in a trio for "Over the Rainbow" and his intense "Un Poco Loco." [The 2001 reissue offers nine alternate takes: two versions of "Bouncing With Bud," "It Could Happen to You," "A Night in Tunisia," "Ornithology," "Dance of the Infidels," "Wail," and two versions of "Un Poco Loco."]
