Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
This is a very big, very complex and expensive pop up book. It is not for small children or even large children who will not take the time to understand how it works and that its moving parts are made from paper. Primarily, it is a flea circus that is operated from behind a large screen that pops up when the front cover is opened. The reader/operator of the flea circus stands behind the screen and, by following directions printed on the back of the screen, turns the pages and puts the imaginary fleas (too small to be seen by human eyes) through their paces. The reader/operator will pull tabs, turn wheels and push buttons so that things move in front of the screen to make it seem that fleas have jumped, walked a tightrope, or dived into a pool of water. On another level, if it happens that the reader/operator is a little slow learning how to operate his circus, there are interesting science facts printed on the pages in front of the screen to keep a lively audience entertained. Assorted fleas, mites, lice and bedbugs are pictured and their life styles described. Much of the information about fleas is used to illustrate why a motorcycle can balance on a tightrope or how a spinning ice skater controls the speed of his spin. This book will appeal to those children with an inclination to give shows and entertain an audience. 2002, Big Fish/Chrysalis Books/Sterling,
