Editorial Reviews

From Barnes & Noble

This 312-page hardcover storybook collection gathers several unforgettable tales of Spider-Man heroics.

Children's Literature - Michael Jung PhD
Comic book fans looking to introduce young children to age appropriate classic comic books while helping develop their reading skills need look no further than this fun collection of modernized Spider-Man stories, based on the classic tales by Spider-Man popular comic book writers and artists (including Spider-Man co-creators Stan Lee and Steve Ditko). Starting with a brief story recapping Spidey's origin, the book swiftly moves through nineteen additional stories that showcase Spider-Man's later adventures with popular villains from his rogues gallery, including the Green Goblin, Dr. Octopus, Lizard, Sandman, and Vulture. The stories focus largely on Spider-Man's amazing battles (unlike the comics which gave equal time to the soap opera aspects of Spider-Man/Peter Parker's personal life) in an attempt to cater to the action-oriented appetites of its younger target audience. Nevertheless, the book's final tale, "What Makes a Hero?" breaks the mold by showing Spider-Man encountering every day heroes, from family members to policemen to EMTs, revealing how a superhero's help isn't always necessary to help others. It's a bit corny and more than a little sentimental, but it does provide a welcome change from the entertaining but slightly repetitive fight scenes of the other stories. Reviewer: Michael Jung, PhD
