School Library Journal - School Library Journal
K-Gr 3-An imaginative but rather disjointed tale from Quebec about a nonconformist sheep who wishes to travel and his girlfriend, a white whale who teaches him the glories of the ocean. Eventually, the sheep learns to swim, grows much larger, and his skin becomes smooth. He and the whale fall in love, and are "still drifting along-With their bodies in the water and their heads in the clouds." The illustrations are bright and childlike, but cannot redeem a cluttered text that seems unfocused and has words that are too difficult for a young audience. Andrew Clement's Big Al (S & S, 1991), Leo Lionni's Swimmy (Knopf, 1963), and Marcus Pfister's Rainbow Fish (North-South, 1992) are better choices for a unit on the sea/friendship theme.-Judith Constantinides, East Baton Rouge Parish Main Library, LA Copyright 2000 Cahners Business Information.|
