The American Alligatorby Dorothy Brenner Francis
The sunbaked concrete warmed Jon's feet. He liked having a pool all to himself. The pool gate was already open. Jon ran to the deep end. Holding his nose, he jumped in. Splash! The water felt cool as satin. Jon swam across the deep end. sThen suddenly, he wasn't alone. There! A still, dark form floated a few feet away. Who had joined him? He hadn't heard a splash. Then the dark form turned toward him. Two knoblike eyes stared. Two nostrils sniffed. It took Jon only an instant to shout. "Help! Alligator! Help!" He swam quickly to the pool's edge. He didn't look back. Was the alligator coming for him?
