Editorial Reviews

Library Journal

This fourth collegiate edition of The American Heritage® Dictionary(AHD)continues and expands the "Usage Notes" feature, which is made up of brief essays describing common use, critical principles of "best" practice, and reports of the surveyed opinion of the dictionary's group of 200 well-known writers, critics, and scholars. Updates to this lower-priced, reduced-format, black-and-white version include 7500 new words and senses, timely additions to biographical entries (e.g., Donald Rumsfeld), and factual, statistical revisions to entries about U.S. states, cities, and towns. A style guide; an extensive appendix on Indo-European roots; and useful charts and tables on the books of the Bible, calendars, world currencies, geologic time, the planets of the solar system, proofreading marks, the taxonomy of life; and the Periodic Table of the Elements round out the work. A free CD-ROM permits users to download the entire contents of this dictionary (with audio pronunciations) as well as those of the college-level Roget's II: The New Thesaurus, Third Edition. The electronic version of the dictionary is easily accessible from within MS Office applications, which makes it one of the most flexible and comprehensive electronic-language reference packages available.

Booknews
Of all American-English dictionaries, American Heritage dictionaries have most closely hewn to an ideal that dictionaries should not only answer questions about individual words, but should engage the mind in larger questions involving the usage and history of the language. The present thumb-indexed (plain edge also available) dictionary displays in a more compact form most of the virtues of its immediate predecessor, the much-admired American Heritage Dictionary of the English Language, Third Edition (1992). These include new words of the 1990s, guidance to usage, word histories, regional notes, an Indo- European roots appendix, and some 2,500 illustrations. Annotation c. Modern American English at Its Best

The American Heritage College Dictionary has been my favorite since high school. It illuminates the American lexicon with perfect clarity. The editors address major issues of usage and idiom. And it has all the curse words and obscenities you can think of, specifying variants of usage and meaning. This might not seem like a positive attribute to many people. But if you respect the English language, the dictionary you pick up has an obligation to explain things honestly and completely. It is a mark of the integrity of the AH that the foulest words that come out of our mouths are scrutinized with scholastic flair.

    I Also Recommend:

    Good book, lousy delivery

This is the ONLY dictionary that I recommend to international and domestic students because it is the ONLY one that continues to fulfill the purpose of a true dictionary. Unlike most popular dictionaries that shed the responsibility to clarify diction -- formal, informal, jargon, slang, etc.--and become simply USAGE references to list HOW Americans use words, the AHCD actually tells people how they SHOULD use words correctly. It maintains standards, clarifies CORRECT usage, and provides the level of guidance that a true dictionary should. Unfortunately, I ordered one of these books and received something completely different from B&N. In that sense, I ordered one of these to give to a friend for Christmas and received a cheap little paperback (nothing comparable to the actual dictionary ordered) instead. Sigh.
