Editorial Reviews

KLIATT
The companion volume to the PBS series, this handsome book presents material already familiar to the inveterate public television viewer. The novelty of the Kunhardts' approach lies in their arrangement of the presidents, not in chronological order but by groupings such as "The Candidate," "A Matter of Destiny," and "Executive Vision." This results in some unlikely groupings: Van Buren, Buchanan, Lincoln and Lyndon Johnson are joined under the heading "The Professional Politicians" while the quartet of Jefferson, Coolidge, Hoover and Reagan stand under the title "The American Way." On average, 10 to 12 pages are devoted to each president, pages that include a text replete with quotations from the president's own writings and liberally captioned pictures and inserts. To the text are added citations from the Constitution that pertain to the presidency and a bibliography of primary and secondary sources on each man. A valuable addition to any reference library.
