Overview

This one-of-a-kind resource covers both basic and clinical sciences for psychiatrists and psychiatry residents preparing for Part 1 of the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Examination in Psychiatry. The American Psychiatric Publishing Board Prep and Review Guide for Psychiatry offers a practical refresher on essential material, minimizing the need to consult multiple sources. It is an authoritative work that can be used with confidence, drawing on the latest editions of the APPI Textbook of Clinical Psychiatry, the APPI Textbook of Neuropsychiatry and Clinical Neurosciences, and their " Essentials" editions.

The book is arranged in topical order to conform to the examination's coverage. The first 11 chapters review basic sciences as well as topics such as psychological assessment, cultural psychiatry, and legal issues. Subsequent chapters address the entire gamut of clinical syndromes along categories consistent with DSM-IV-TR classification, accompanied by chapters on the psychiatric interview, diagnostics, psychopharmacology, psychotherapy, and pain disorders. Quick-reference tables summarize diagnostic criteria for psychiatric disorders. Multiple-choice study questions appear at the end of each chapter, with annotated answers provided at the back of the book.

Editorial Reviews

Doody's Review Service
Reviewer: Steven T. Herron, MD (University of Arizona Health Sciences Center)
Description: Compiled by experts in their respective fields, this manual is meant to provide a succinct yet thorough review of much of the material an individual sitting for Part I of the ABPN Examination will need to master for a successful outcome.
Purpose: By condensing much of the information from other works by this publisher, this book attempts to provide a balance between "efficiency and comprehensiveness" for individuals reviewing the vast amounts of information accumulating in psychiatry.
Audience: While potentially useful for medical students or other health professionals, this manual is primarily intended for those who have completed advanced training in psychiatry and are interested in reviewing the current knowledge in various areas of the field.
Features: With a focus on topics from neuroanatomy and neuroimaging to genetics, and from disorders of infancy, childhood, and adolescence to women's mental health, each chapter ends with an extensive list of references and a few questions (between three and five) intended to assess the reader's understanding of the material. Answers to the questions are included in the last section, along with detailed explanations and additional references.
Assessment: Much of the other review material available is either too brief (outline form), or overly cumbersome, causing people to combine resources and create a system unique to their own style of learning. This book is both useful and efficient, and tends to cover a broad range of topics without overwhelming readers. While it would be nice to have a few more sample questions at the end of each chapter (say, 10), and there is no specific chapter on geriatric issues in psychiatry (besides dementia and delirium), overall this is a worthy addition to the field and will be a vital resource in preparing for the board examination.
