Editorial Reviews

VOYA - Vicky Yablonsky
This chronology provides coverage of American history from 1776 through 1997. The volume begins with a brief overview of colonial history, divided into twelve categories, covering a range of topics from national and international events to business, arts and sciences, religion, literature, entertainment and sports. These categories are followed within the year-by-year coverage, with two to five pages of information for each year. The traditional political history is augmented by the detailed coverage of social and cultural topics. The volume's clear layout sets off categories and events distinctly. The user can easily check a year's events or follow a category through a range of years. The writing is clear and concise. A lengthy, detailed index provides access to entries with year and page number. However, some omissions are surprising; the entry for 1863 includes Lincoln's November 19 speech at Gettysburg Cemetery, but the index has no listing for the Gettysburg Address. Likewise, the index omits a listing for Wilson's Fourteen Points, although they are included in the coverage for 1918. There is, however, more than a page of index listings under baseball indicating the volume's emphasis on social and cultural topics. There are numerous black-and-white illustrations, identified within the index. This easy-to-use reference would be a good source for fact-checking or as a starting place for research. The wide coverage of topics beyond the traditional political should appeal to many students. Index. Illus. Photos.

Gr 6 Up-An easy-to-use chronology that examines different aspects of life in the U.S. and identifies trends. For each year from 1776 to 1997, events and developments in most or all of the following categories are noted: international, national, transportation, religion, entertainment, education, arts/music, sports, business/industry/inventions, science/medicine, and literature/journalism. A list of the abbreviations used is provided. Copious black-and-white photographs and reproductions illustrate the volume. However, the jewel of the book is the 140-page index. Everything is included-songs, illustrations, books, movies, and legal decisions. A useful, accessible book for researchers and the curious alike.-Marsha S.
