Children's Literature - K. Meghan Robertson
Part of the "Myths of the World" series, this title gives a good look into the Ancient Africans and the art of their storytelling. There is an introduction to the series at the beginning of each of the books, describing the importance of mythology in cultures, which in itself is a great resource for teaching myth, be it in a cultures or language arts class. Part one, "Meet the Ancient Africans," is a concise look at the peoples and geography of Africa with a clear map. Then the reader dives more into the continent that boasts birthing the human race, including a look at the traditional religions of Africa and the devout followers of them. One gets a feel for the Africans' way of life through clear and colorful photographs before beginning Part two, "Timeless Tales of Ancient Africa." This section is a great combination of text with images and captions, quotations from ancient texts and narratives, and a guide before each story with character names, pronunciations, and brief descriptions. Although the font is slightly larger than normal for older readers, this is a beautiful resource for students of all ages because it does a great job retelling a variety of myths from the Yoruba, Fon, Baronga, Ashanti, Nyanga, and Khoikhoi peoples. The "Myths of the World" series is geared to the younger readers and is ideal for middle school libraries, but it would be a terrific asset to the high school teacher that wants to show real works of art and a variety of mythology for comparison and contrast.
