Children's Literature - Karen Leggett
"Who were the ancient Egyptians?" asks the opening chapter. Youngsters will not only read the answer to the question but also learn how to make a Pharaoh's crown, a game of senet, and a reed boat with drinking straws that looks surprisingly like a miniature papyrus boat. Each turn of the page brings a new topic and a related craft, from cows and crops to home and family, looking good (make an Egyptian necklace), skillful scribes (learn to write hieroglyphics), and amazing mummies (mold and paint a clay "shabti," (the servant dolls placed in tombs). Short, easily read paragraphs are surrounded by photos, maps, or tomb paintings. The captions bring life to some of the routine but often hard to decipher activities depicted in the ancient paintings. The craft instructions include actual photos of a young person completing each step, though sometimes it would be helpful to have more completely written instructions. There is a glossary, an index, and notes for teachers or parents including many Internet resources. There is enough information on each page to enable young readers to write their first short research reports and enough variety to interest just about every student in class. Ancient Egypt is a perennially popular topic and this is a welcome contribution to an otherwise overcrowded shelves of books on the subject. Reviewer: Karen Leggett
