The Andropause Mystery: unraveling truths about the Male Menopause" is the creation of an opinion leader, who is an academic specialist in Geriatric Medicine. In simple to understand language, the author expounds the reality of this significant milestone in men that is parallel to women's menopause. He shares about his own clinical research and explains why not all men experience the Andropause uniformly. The ten chapters incorporate true-life case histories and discuss unique perspectives of memory loss, erectile dysfunction and sexuality in aging. The author demystifies the Andropause, and suggests preventive and therapeutic options including testosterone, alternative hormones, diet, supplements and other remedies for this life-changing event. An active stance on preventive medicine is taken including exercise and smoking cessation. There is an extensive bibliography. This book is written not only for men, but also for women as they try to comprehend their partner's aging processes.

About the Author
Robert Tan M.D., M.B.A. is a board certified Geriatrician, and a nationally known opinion leader on the Andropause (Male Menopause). He has written and presented several scientific papers and review articles on the Andropause and Testosterone Replacement for Men. His publications have appeared in prestigious peer reviewed medical journals. He is a lifetime member of Strathmore's Who's Who. He was elected a Fellow of the American Geriatrics Society by his peers and achieved the Outstanding Award for his contributions to Aging. He is a visiting Associate Professor to the University of Texas in Houston. He was interviewed by CBS in Spring 2000 because of his pioneering work on the Andropause. He has also served as an expert on the appropriate use of Testosterone and currently serves as a Consultant for the development of aging related pharmaceutical products. He has traveled to several cities across the United States lecturing to physicians on Hypogonadism and Testosterone therapy and has been invited to Malaysia, Germany and Egypt for speaking engagements on the Andropause.

This book is 186 pages long, is well indexed, and has a selected bibliography for each of its 10 chapters. It is organized as a treatise on andropause and is easily consumed when picked up at any point. The style is simple and lends itself to rapid reading. For physicians it is a good jumping point into the literature and understanding the issues from the patient's point of view. For patients, it is well presented, understandable, and issue focused. For example, patients would appreciate the chapter covering psychological impact of aging on sexuality. It is well organized and covers many of the questions that our older patients and their wives typically pose.

    Andropause Mystery: Unraveling Truths about the Male Menopause

    My husband finally got to see his doctor, and indeed he suffers from the effects of andropause. I wish more people would know about this physiological condition that occurs with aging. I am glad I read the book, The Andropause Mystery, as it probably gave my husband a second chance at life! The book is easy to read and I think some doctors themselves should read this book too!

    Discovery

    So little accurate information is available on this topic. This book is written with honesty and is a journey of discovery. I did some research myself of recent medical journals written on the andropause and discovered that the author is indeed an authority on this subject.

    Andropause Mystery: Unraveling Truths about the Male Menopause

    This book is unlike any other book I've read. It is about time there is a book like this one. It is informative and keeps my interest without boring me. This book helps me to understand that men do have an 'cycle' in a sense like women do, yet not the same as ours. I recommend it highly to all men and especially to women to help understand the changes that men undergo as well.

    Eye opener for aging men

    This is certainly an eye opener. My wife alerted me to this book, and most of what is described is for real. It is a pity that most people don't really understand aging men health problems; and this book is very well written and informative. I would highly recommend it.

    Andropause Mystery: Unraveling Truths about the Male Menopause

    This book defines Male Aging processes very well. However, I feel that the term 'Male Menopause' should be used more reservedly, as men cannot technically have a Menopause as they do not have periods. The author did explain an alternative terminology called A.D.A.M. (Androgen Decline in Aging Males). I suspect the term Andropause will stick, as the alternative of A.D.A.M. will be quite a mouthful! In any event, this is an excellent book. What is most reassuring is that the book is written by a very well respected academic physician. It has wonderful case histories, and explains that not 'everything works all of the time at the same time'. The book has a slant towards brain function and hormones, something that is perhaps a new fresh perspective. Preventive strategies like smoking cessation is based on hard core research by the author himself. This book has the potential of being a classic. I enjoyed this book and learnt more about my husband's transtions into an older person!

    I've already loaned my copy, this is an excellent handbook for the slightly beyond middle-aged male's body. Very practical and readable, I will recommend it for my 50 year old patients, males and partners, to help them answer questions, to know what to expect, and to get the most from life.

    Excellent book on 'male menopause'

    Dr. Tan has brought a very important, but underappreciated topic to the common man. In simple language, he explains the various features of Andropause and also adds various real life scenarios. For the serious reader, solid research data is included. Every adult male and female needs to read this book. Even medicos will find this book useful.

    An Inspiration for the Male Aging Process

    Robert Tan, MD, has written a book with feeling and true character. He explains how he comes to his conclusions, he shares personal stories, and he tells us about his research. This book is for anyone who would like to learn more about this mystery. I really enjoyed his book and feel that 'The Andropause Mystery' will surely open the door for future research in this area.

    The Andropause Mystery

    At least women are more fortunate than men to be able to know and understand about their menopause through the distinct point. I am sure it causes great confusion to many men when they grow older due to physical and physiological changes, due to lack of understanding about male menopauseand distinct point. This book has unraveled the truth, which will be able to help men and women to understand better about male menopause. I recommend that this book not only for men, also equally for women. It helps the men to understand better about themselves and be able to prepare for the aging process, and the women to understand their male partner better. Thanks for the good work, Dr Tan.

    And now I know

    There is a lot of information cramped into this little book. The book has interesting caricatures that tie in well with the chapter. It appeals to a wide audience. For the scientifically inclined, there is even a chapter on the author's research into the Andropause. Practical, informative and very interesting.

    Robert Tan obviously writes with both feet in the water, sharing not only from his experience as a geriatric clinician, but also as a scientist-researcher in this poorly publicized topic. Particularly interesting are the true-life case histories, many of whom I easily related with, and thereby enabling me to connect intimately with the points being put forth.

    Male menopause

    Dr Robert Tan certainly enlightens the common man on a subject that most of us do not even know existed. The manisfestations and descriptions of Andropause is real but has not been articulated in the way which Dr Tan has been able to do before. The facts on this subject will be of great interest to anyone in his middle age as it goes beyond the clinical descriptions into hopeful areas of treatment and life enhancement. I certainly recommend anyone wishing to know where aging leads to read this highly informative and well written book.

    The book is written for those who want to understand men. They do go through a male menopause just as women go through a female menopause. I believe that men most certainly do go through a male menopause on or before the ages of 40-50 years of age. Through the book, I reinforced my belief that most men don't even know they do have hormonal imbalances. This book gives answers to questions that are never asked and gives knowledge to a layperson like myself. It is about time that this book has been written. Dr. Tan has done a marvelous job!

    Male Menopause! Who would have thought!

    As a licensed nursing facility administrator for the past 10 years, I've had the opportunity to closely observe physiological, psychosocial, and biochemical changes that my elderly male residents exhibited. After reading Dr. Robert Tan's book, I now have a better understanding that the possible root of depression, memory loss, and bone loss was hormonal. Like many other geriatric professionals and the public at large, I only believed that this hormonal imbalance could only occur in women. Had I known what I now know from Dr. Tan's research, I could have easily taken steps to promote appropriate treatment plans for my male residents who were probable candidates. Now that Dr. Tan has shed light on the this subject, I have faith that other geriatric professionals will learn the truth about andropause and can offer help to their male residents and patients.
