Overview

"The Angry Couple" dramatically recreates key moments in the six-month course of therapy with Judith and Richard, a distressed married couple in their early 30' s who've come to treatment locked in a seemingly irreconcilable conflict. Dr. Heitler demonstrates her highly original approach for helping couples quickly cut through impasses that prolong their conflict and obscure the fundamental issues.

Dr. Heilter's interactions with this difficult couple, further illuminated by her commentary, offer step-by-step guidance in how to:

  • defuse anger in the treatment room, without taking sides.

  • formulate a comprehensive treatment plan based on an assessment of the symptoms, content, and process of conflicts;

  • guide resolution of conflicts from initial presentation through exploration of hidden concerns to the final selection of mutually acceptable solutions;

  • build communication skills through such exercises as the "I-statement" and the "Yes, and . . ." drills;

  • explore and resolve underlying family-of-origin issues;

  • bring the treatment to satisfying closure.

An accompanying viewer's manual provides a wealth of information about Heitler's conflict-focused treatment model, plus background data on the case, a session-by-session review of the therapy, and Heitler's own critical evaluation of the treatment. Table and charts summarize key points.

Together the two components introduce viewers to a powerful new model for helping couples and other sparring parties identify their concerns and develop the skills to articulate them so that everyone walks away a winner.

What People Are Saying

Arthur J. Freeman
This is an excellent presentation . . . A valuable teaching and training tool, it clearly illustrates that successful clinical practice involves the ability to take a focused problem-solving approach which integrates perspectives and techniques from several therapeutic modalities. Clinicians of every theoretical orientation will find something of value in this clear and thoughtful presentation.

Angry couples can be intimidating to a therapist who usually treats individuals. Watching The Angry Coupl multiple times and reading the accompanying Manual gave me skills for when spouses get mad at each other-or me-plus techniques for guiding conflict to resolution and a clearer map of the overall treatment process. My confidence has grown tremendously knowing I have a solid treatment structure.
