The Animatrix

Editorial Reviews

Barnes & Noble - Dave Gil de Rubio
Building on the Matrix film franchise, the Wachowski brothers hired a team of animators to create several short anime films that provide back story for the popular movie series. The short films also serve as a springboard for the third installment of the trilogy, due in Fall 2003. Like its sister movie soundtracks, the accompanying Animatrix soundtrack complements the story's futuristic setting with pulsing electronica and techno. The tone is set by Death in Vegas's New Order–like "Hands Around My Throat"; Meat Beat Manifesto's pumping electronic beeps and snappy beats on "Martenot Waves"; and Photek's hypnotic, sound effects–laden "Ren2," peppered with fuzz guitar. Junkie XL -- best known for his chart-topping remix of Elvis Presley's "A Little Less Conversation" -- checks in with the trance-inducing "A Beauty That Never Fades," which suggests Paul Oakenfold, and the frantic "Red Pill, Blue Pill," which refers to a major plot point in The Matrix and incorporates film dialogue. Other highlights include Overseer's contrasting mix of block-rocking beats and subtle string arrangements on "Supermoves" and the swirling, ambient "Who Am I?" from Peace Orchestra, a side project from down-tempo master Peter Kruder of Kruder & Dorfmeister. This headphone-ready soundtrack acts as both an essential component to the Matrix series and a timely summation of electronica circa 2003.
