Editorial Reviews

Children's Literature
Victoria von Woolf is a twelve-year-old bona fide computer and science geek dreaming of becoming an astrophysicist. She hates the world she lives in—a world where school is awful, her parents are divorcing and the beauty of the night sky is blocked by light pollution. The only saving graces are her access to computers and her imagination. As part of a science contest, Victoria wins a trip to Antarctica sponsored by a supposedly reputable science e-zine going on a scientific expedition. A few days into the trip, though, Victoria finds out that the parent company of this e-zine actually wants to develop and exploit the continent of Antarctica. Torn between her sponsors and her conscience, Victoria must decide what path to take. This is a very well-written and researched book, full of interesting detail and factual information. The characters are believable and the main storyline and interesting subplots keep the reader's interest high. 2003, Holiday House, Ages 10 to 14.

School Library Journal
Gr 4-6-Victoria, 12, is a loner whose interests and skills are in science and computers. She dreams of being an astrophysicist who discovers the secrets of time travel. When she wins an online magazine contest to visit Antarctica, she is determined to see the launch at the South Pole of a new telescope. As Victoria sets off on her adventure, she is accompanied by one of the sponsors, Madeleine Sinclair, and a photographer. With the help of an online friend, the contest's runner-up, Victoria discovers that Ms. Sinclair is unscrupulous, and her unethical behavior is soon evident to the scientific community at the South Pole, putting an end to the exploration. Just as the visit to the telescope looks impossible, Victoria finds a way not only to see it, but to assist with its launch. This adventure story moves quickly for the most part. Although the plot is a bit choppy, readers will have no difficulty following along. Most characters are created only to propel the action and lack depth. Readers know a little more about Victoria, making her thoughts and motivations more easily understood. Setting is somewhat weak. Descriptions are few and lack details. Some aspects of the book are a bit far-fetched, but children will enjoy the empowerment and resourcefulness of the protagonist and her friend.-Carolyn Janssen, Children's Learning Center of the Public Library of Cincinnati and Hamilton County, OH Copyright 2003 Reed Business Information.
Kirkus Reviews
Victoria, 12, is a science nerd with an active imagination. She plans to be an astrophysicist one day if she can keep out of trouble at school. She wins a magazine contest to be the first kid scientist to visit Antarctica, but the company backing the trip wants to exploit the continent for tourism. Victoria foils their plan and gets to the South Pole, where she meets and assists her idol, Dr. Robin Reynolds, and even meets a boy once she gets home. A spunky, though at times annoying, protagonist can't save this scattered, unrealistic wannabe thriller. Even the adult characters don't act realistically. If this were entirely a child's fantasy about a trip to Antarctica, it would be partially successful. In all, it's a very pale imitation of Troubling a Star. Pass on this and purchase another copy of L'Engle's classic. (Fiction. 8-12)
