From the Publisher
Marriage . . . you gotta laugh.

They say that marriage is a lot like insanity, in that they both require commitment. I so get that.

When you’re in those first giddy stages of dating, you have no idea what life is going to throw your way. You’re just two bright-eyed kids full of optimism, convinced you’re going to be the happiest married couple ever.

Y’all. Trust me. Saying, “I do” is easy. It’s the next fifty years or so that can get a little tricky.

There are days you feel like you’ve never loved each other more. But there are also days filled with disappointment and silence that never seem to end because you just can’t seem to find the words to make it right.

Marriage can be the biggest blessing and the most significant challenge two people ever take on. It’s the joy of knowing there’s someone to share in your sorrows and triumphs, and the challenge of living with someone who thinks it’s a good idea to hang a giant antelope head on your living room wall.

And yet we are in this thing together. For the rest of our lives. Not just for better or for worse, but for better AND for worse.

That’s what this book is about. The times that brought us together and the times we were falling apart. The days we wouldn’t trade for anything in the world, and that time he hung an antelope on my wall.

Welcome to the story of a real marriage.

Melanie Shankle puts in print what most wives have thought or experienced in marriage. So easy to related to what happened over the course of her married life! Truly enjoyed this book.

Very Entertaining While Being Real. Melanie Shankle has absolutely great humor even while being transparent about her very human quirks and very real marriage. This book has a practical side, too, regarding her courtship, relationship, faith, and marriage, but I really enjoyed it and thought it was very funny. I read a lot of parts out loud to my husband, who laughed, too. We can relate to some of the scenarios she mentions. I don’t always read the endorsements, so I didn’t discover them until after I finished the book. My husband and I laughed some more at the fake funny endorsements from recognizable culture and TV references. Maybe I’d better get Sparkly Green Earrings now.

What a hilarious, honest, and refreshing look at marriage! I found myself laughing out loud from the fake endorsements through the very end. Many of Shankle's stories reminded me of my own marriage. Sometimes it was funny, and sometimes it caused me to think about things in a new way. While I don't normally read memoirs about people I don't "know," I have thoroughly enjoyed both of Melanie Shankle's books. I love her sense of humor and hope you will find something to laugh over while you read this delightful book!

Before I started reading this book, I knew it would make me laugh because Shankle is gifted at finding and expressing the humor in most of life's situations. I was not disappointed. This book offers laughs in every chapter as Melanie describes her marriage and the blending of two people into one life. The best part about this book is that even though each marriage is different, there are some characteristics that are universal. Shankle focuses on the humor in them, even if they are not particularly funny at the moment they happen. I love the way she differentiates between Old Love and New Love because it is so true. Things are vastly different in the land of Old Love than in the land of New Love - not better or worse, just different. If you are looking for a book to make you laugh and brighten up your day, this is the book for you, especially if you are married. This is a very funny book!

Melanie Shankle is so incredibly gifted in the hilarity department! She knows how to weave a story so perfectly that I'm laughing out loud at least every other paragraph. I sit in bed, read, laugh, try to hold the laughter in so I don't bother my hubby who's trying to study... but then the laughter just erupts and he has to know what I just read that's so funny. In conclusion, I've read him about 1/4 of this book... and he has actually TAKEN THE BOOK FROM ME when I was in the middle of reading and not given it back! I can't wait to get my hands on her Sparkly Green Earrings book!

If you want to read a hilarious book, read this one. Melanie met Perry at a Bible study at Texas A&M. Several months later they both moved back to their family home: Perry to San Antonio and Melanie to Houston. However the only job Melanie found was a sales job in San Antonio. Miserable and lonely in the new city, Melanie called her friend Gregg who had been their leader for Breakaway. He reminded her she was living near Perry. Desperate for a friend she contacted Perry and eventually they got married. And the fun and laughs began. From trying to paint over old paint to trying to lose weight to buying new jeans with Perry’s help to deciding who gets up with the baby or changes the messy diaper, to sitting in a deer blind waiting for the deer to come so you can shoot it without making all her doe friends sad, to listening to young guys trying to sell new windows, or to deciding what to give Perry for Christmas, etc., Melanie Shankle told funny story after story of life as she was experiencing it. You can’t help but laugh! This is a book you will really enjoy!

How very funny! I love how Melanie brings humor into everyday situations! (I’m sure she would be my friend if I ever met her!) She tells of her courtship with her husband – and of how things became different when they married. The difference between new love and old love. She references all sorts of things from my childhood – like Cherry Ames books and watching the Sound of Music once a year when it came on TV, putting on SPF 2 and thinking we were really protecting ourselves from sunburn. This was just a really humorous look at Christian life and marriage and I recommend it to all my girlfriends!

This was a very funny and entertaining book! Melanie Shankle talks about when her and her husband were first married and some of the funny adventures she went through. There were stories that I could definitely relate to even though I've been married a few more years than her. This was a very easy book to read and Melanie Shankle is a very talented writer. I would recommend this to everyone!

Entertaining Book!   This book offers an honest glimpse into the author's marriage sharing both the funny moments and a few serious ones.  This was a funny entertaining read.

Melanie is a great writer and her book is so sweet and funny.  Her references regarding "old love meaning your spouse takes a cab to the hospital before his surgery" literally had me laughing so hard I had tears in my eyes.  Great read!

I purchased this book based upon how much I liked Melanie's "Sparkly Green Earrings." Both books have laugh out loud moments, as well as touching and sad. But throughout Shankle uses wit and humor to blaze through various marriage subjects. She shares how her faith has helped through life. I recommend this for anyone wanting a humorous look at a faith-based marriage.

Absolutely loved it ! Melanie is so honest about marriage, that it is wonderful, difficult, challenging and something to fight for. She also has great dry humor that has me laughing out loud. Even better than her first book 'Sparkly Green Earrings', which I really enjoyed also. She writes a blog called Big Mama that is also very humorous.

Melanie Shankle's first book, "Sparkly Green Earrings" was a memoir on motherhood, and this one (although in a similar style) is about marriage. Both provide the author's humorous and down to earth take on life and family - and both are well done. In "The Antelope in the Living Room," each of the chapters -with super awesome titles, such as "We Make Dave Ramsey Sad" and, "That Time I Almost Went on Judge Judy"- tell a different story from Melanie and husband Perry's lives, beginning with the wedding and their lives as newlyweds up to present day. She calls it "the story of a real marriage," and you can easily see their transparency as well as their love for each other. She doesn't sugarcoat, nor is this a cautionary tale; rather, they are simply real stories that make up their lives together for better or for worse. I had never heard of Melanie, hadn't read her blog prior to reading this, but CLEARLY we would be friends. If we hung out. And that is perhaps the best endorsement I can offer you :)
